SuriPaco farm is one of the very few alpaca farms in the U.S. to develop a commercial production program for both yarn and textiles. While many farms either purchase Peruvian wool, yarn or knitted products for their farm store or, alternatively, have their own fiber processed at regional “mini” mills, SuriPaco has taken the next step in utilizing domestically grown alpaca. Beginning with U.S. produced alpaca fiber, sorted and washed at a Maine commercial scouring facility, the Farm oversees the production of yarn in 300-2,000 lb quantities at established, U.S. commercial spinning mills. This yarn is then either sold to hand knitters or sent to U.S. commercial weaving and knitting companies for the production of socks, blankets, throws and other items. We have chosen to make this substantial investment to assist in the development of a U.S. market for high-end U.S. alpaca products instead of relying upon Peruvian imported items.
